INFORMATION AND GUIDELINES FOR NATIONAL IDENTITY (NID) CARD APPLICATION

Before applying, please read all instructions and application guidelines thoroughly.

Who can Apply?

  • The applicant must be above 18 years Bangladeshi origin national living in United Kingdom or Ireland having required documents to prove his/her Bangladeshi origin.
  • Those who already have NID or applied for NID in Bangladesh will not be qualified to apply in the High Commission.

Mandatory Physical Appearance

Please note that Physical Appearance is mandatory for NID enrolment, as such, applicants must take an appointment.

NID Application Process

  • Step 1: Applicants must submit their application online. Please apply online at https://services.nidw.gov.bd/nid-pub.
  • Step 2: Appointment Booking: Applicants must book an appointment for biometrics at the High Commission. The appointment needs to be booked logging into the same portal (not High Commission website) after you have submitted the application. For this, you need to log on your registration profile, then chose home, then third option for appointment. For London station, please select UK, London, rather than Birmingham and Manchester.
  • Step 3: Biometric Enrolment: Applicants are required to appear in person on the date and time of appointment at the High Commission to submit their fingerprint, Iris scan, photograph and signature along with duly filled in and printed form and required documents as specified in Required Documents section.
  • Step 4: Verification Process: The relevant Upazila/Thana Election Office will conduct a verification. This is the most import part of NID processing and an application will be ready for verification immediately after online submission, irrespective of providing biometrics or not.
  • Step 5: Ready and Collection: Once the biometrics are taken, the applicant will be handed over delivery slip/receipt, which will be required during the collection of smart NID card. After all the formalities are done, then the NID smart card will be issued and printed in Election Commission, Dhaka and eventually be sent to us. Only then the High Commission will be able to deliver the smart card.

Required Documents

Following documents must be submitted to the High Commission-

  • Printed copy of online filled up application [form 2 (KA)]

  • A photocopy of 17-digit Bangladeshi Birth Certificate (BRC) + online verified copy of BRC Click here to check & print the verified copy
  • A photocopy of Valid Bangladeshi Passport/photocopy of Expired Bangladeshi Passport/photocopy of Foreign Passport/Certificate in the "Prescribed Form" from three Bangladeshi NID holders residing in the UK/Ireland. Click here for the form
  • A recent passport size photo (Photo to be attached on the application form with glue)
  • Photocopy of the applicant’s parents’ NID / Photocopy of the applicant’s parents’ Online available Birth Registration Certificate (BRC) / Photocopy of the applicant’s parents’ Bangladeshi Death Certificate (if deceased) / Photocopy of the applicant’s parents’ Passport / Photocopy of applicant’s parents’ Succession Certificate obtained from the concerned local office in Bangladesh / Photocopy of applicant’s parents’ Nationality Certificate obtained from the concerned local office in Bangladesh

Additionally, if the applicant is from the Chattogram/Cox's Bazar/Rangamati or Bandarban District, needs to fill up the "Special Information Form".

Following documents can be asked from the applicants by the concerned Upazila Election Office in Bangladesh to complete the verification process-

  • Academic certificate (SSC/Equivalent Certificate/JSC/PSC)
  • Parents' NID (Death certificate if dead)
  • Bangladeshi driving license, TIN (if applicable)
  • Marriage certificate and Spouse' NID (if applicable)
  • Nationality certificate (from Bangladeshi Councillor/Chairman/Mayor/CEO)
  • A copy of Bangladeshi Utility Bill

Other General Instructions

  • Only new NID applicants can apply; existing NID holders will not be able to correct their NID from the High Commission.
  • The applicant needs both Bangla and English font to fill up the application form.
  • After application submission to the High Commission, there will be a verification process by the concerned Upazila Election Office in Bangladesh.
  • Providing false information is a punishable offence.

Processing time

The processing time for NID card may vary due to the thorough verification procedures implemented by the concerned Upazila Election Office. These checks are carried out to confirm the authenticity of the information provided during the application process.

Note

For future usage, keep your password and user name available. With your ID and password, you can log in to the concerned portal at any time to schedule an appointment or download NID card.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - National Identity (NID) Card Application

A: Bangladeshi nationals aged 18 years or above who are residing in the United Kingdom or Ireland and can provide the required documents to prove their Bangladeshi origin.

A:No. Applicants who already have a National Identity (NID) Card or have previously applied for an NID in Bangladesh are not eligible to apply through the Bangladesh High Commission, London. This also includes individuals who have previously applied for a Voter ID or National Identity (NID) in Bangladesh. Such applicants are strongly advised not to submit a new application through the High Commission. If a duplicate application is submitted, it will be rejected, even if it has already been approved by the relevant Upazila/Thana Election Office in Bangladesh. A significant number of applications have been rejected for this reason.

A: First, please ensure that you are eligible to apply for a National Identity (NID) Card. Once you have met all the eligibility requirements, submit your application online through the NID portal: https://services.nidw.gov.bd/nid-pub. A: After submitting your online application, log into the same NID online portal (not the Bangladesh High Commission website) again. Then go to Home → Appointment (the third option) and select UK, London as your service station. Do not select Birmingham or Manchester.

A: Yes. Physical appearance is mandatory for biometric enrolment (photograph, fingerprints, Irish scanand signature). You must appear in person at the Bangladesh High Commission, London on your scheduled appointment date with your printed application form and all required supporting documents.

A: The following biometric data will be collected:Fingerprints, Iris scan, Photograph and Digital signature.

A: Your application is verified by your relevant Upazila/Thana Election Office in Bangladesh. An application becomes ready forverification immediately after your online application is submitted.

A: The verification process may begin immediately after you submit your online application, even if your biometric enrolment has not yet been completed at the Bangladesh High Commission, London. During this stage, you may receive a call from the concerned Upazila/Thana Election Office in Bangladesh for verification purposes. If you receive such a call, please do not be concerned. This is a normal part of the verification process. Applicants are advised to cooperate with the Election Office by providing the required information, even if their biometrics have not yet been taken at the High Commission.

A: You will receive a delivery slip/receipt. Keep it safely, as it is required when requesting for update on application status or collecting your Smart NID Card.

A: Smart NID Cards are printed by the Bangladesh Election Commission in Dhaka and then sent to the Bangladesh High Commission, London for delivery.

A: No. The High Commission can deliver your Smart NID Card only after it has been printed in Dhaka and received in London.

A:Please bring the following mandatory documents:

  • Printed copy of the online application (Form 2 (KA)).
  • Special Information Form (if applicable).
  • Photocopy of your 17-digit Bangladeshi Birth Registration Certificate (BRC) and its online verified copy.
  • Photocopy of a valid Bangladeshi passport, expired Bangladeshi passport, foreign passport, or a Certificate in the Prescribed Form from three Bangladeshi NID holders residing in the UK/Ireland.
  • One recent passport-size photograph (to be attached to the application form with glue).
  • Supporting documents relating to either your father or your mother (as applicable).

A:Please submit any one of the following documents, as applicable to your individual circumstances:

  • Photocopy of your parents' National Identity Card (NID).
  • Photocopy of your parents' online available Birth Registration Certificate (BRC).
  • Photocopy of your parents'Online verified Bangladeshi Death Certificate (if deceased).
  • Photocopy of your parents' Bangladeshi Passport.
  • Photocopy of your parents' Succession Certificate issued by the relevant local authority in Bangladesh.
  • Photocopy of your parents' Nationality Certificate issued by the relevant local authority in Bangladesh.

A: Yes. You must submit a photocopy of your 17-digit Bangladeshi Birth Registration Certificate (BRC) together with its online verified copy.

A:During the verification process, the concerned Upazila/Thana Election Office in Bangladesh may request for additional documents, such as:

  • Academic certificates (SSC/Equivalent, JSC, or PSC).
  • Parents' NID or Death Certificate (if deceased).
  • Bangladeshi Driving Licence or TIN (if applicable).
  • Marriage Certificate and spouse's NID (if applicable).
  • Nationality Certificate issued by the concerned Councillor, Chairman, Mayor, or Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in Bangladesh.
  • A copy of a Bangladeshi utility bill.
  • Any other documents which deem appropriate by the Upazilla/Thana Election Office in Bangladesh.
  • Only new NID applicants are eligible to apply through the Bangladesh High Commission, London. Existing NID holders cannot apply for NID correction or request the issuance or delivery of a Smart NID Card through the Bangladesh High Commission, London if their original NID application was submitted in Bangladesh or at any other Bangladesh Mission abroad.
  • The application form must be completed using both Bangla and English fonts.
  • After your application is submitted, it will be verified by the concerned Upazila/Thana Election Office in Bangladesh.
  • Providing false or misleading information is a punishable offence. Applicants who already have a National Identity (NID) Card-including those issued during the initial phase of the NID programme-are strongly advised not to submit a new application. Any duplicate application will be rejected.
  • Processing times may vary depending on the timely completion and submission of the online application, attendance for biometric enrolment at the Bangladesh High Commission, London, the verification process conducted by the relevant Election Office in Bangladesh, and the subsequent printing and dispatch of the Smart NID Card by the Bangladesh Election Commission.
  • It is highly recommended that applicants keep their username and password safe. To avoid errors, applicants are advised to save their username and password in a Microsoft Word document (or similar file) and use the copy-and-paste method when logging in to the NID portal. These credentials will be required in the future to book appointments, check the application status, and download the NID (where applicable). Applicants are also strongly advised to complete the online application using a computer rather than a mobile phone, as navigating between pages and copying/pasting login credentials is generally more convenient on a computer.
