The Bangladesh High Commission in London expresses its deep sorrow at the passing away of Begum Khaleda Zia, three-time former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, a leading figure of the democratic movement, and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Begum Khaleda Zia was a guardian of Bangladesh and a symbol of national unity. In addition to serving as Prime Minister on three occasions, she devoted decades of her life to the struggle for the establishment and preservation of democracy in Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh High Commission in London extends its heartfelt condolences to Begum Khaleda Zia’s family, relatives, friends, and the millions of her supporters at this time of profound loss.

The Bangladesh High Commission in London has opened both online and physical condolence books for all Diplomatic Missions and International Organisations accredited to the Court of St. James’s in London.

The interim government of Bangladesh has declared three days of state mourning starting from Wednesday (31st December 2025) following the death of Begum Khaleda Zia, and to observe a one-day general holiday on Wednesday (31st December 2025).

During the three days of state mourning, the national flag will be flown at half-mast at all government, semi-government and autonomous institutions, educational institutions, all public and private buildings, as well as Bangladesh missions abroad.

At the same time, special prayers and munajat will be held on Wednesday in every mosque across Bangladesh seeking forgiveness for the departed soul of Begum Khaleda Zia. Special prayers will also be arranged at places of worship of other religions.

Condolence books will be opened at Bangladesh missions abroad to mark the death of the former Prime Minister.
