Tarique Rahman, Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), took the oath as the new Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh following a landslide victory with an absolute majority in the 13th National Parliamentary Election.

Mr. Rahman, along with the BNP-formed Cabinet, was sworn into office at a ceremony held at the South Plaza of the Parliament Building, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, on Tuesday, 17 February 2026.

Earlier that morning, Mr. Tarique Rahman, together with the newly elected Members of Parliament from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), took the oath as Members of Parliament.

On 17 February 2026, at around 10:45 a.m., Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A.M.M. Nasir Uddin administered the oath to the newly elected Members of Parliament in the oath-taking room of the National Parliament Building.

After taking the oath, all members signed the oath register.

At the ceremony, Mr. Rahman was accompanied by his wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, and his daughter, Barrister Zaima Rahman.

The program began with a recitation from the Holy Qur’an.

The oath-taking ceremony was conducted by Kaniz Mowla, Secretary of the Parliament Secretariat.

Later, at around 11:15 a.m., the first meeting of the BNP Parliamentary Party was held in the parliamentary party meeting room, chaired by Mr. Rahman.

At that meeting, he was unanimously elected as the Leader of the House and Prime Minister.

It was also decided that BNP Members of Parliament would not accept duty-free cars or government plots under state privileges.

Local and foreign guests attended the oath-taking ceremony.
