Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina has invited Jatiya Oikyafront (JOF) led by Dr. Kamal Hossain to her official residence Ganabhaban in the capital on February 2. The PM yesterday sent separate invitation cards addressing the JOF leaders to exchange greetings over tea.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has congratulated former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee as he was honoured with his country's highest civilian award 'Bharat Ratna'. The Premier greeted Pranab Mukherjee over telephone yesterday.

Bangladesh Awami League has nominated Atiqul Islam, a former President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, to contest the Mayoral by-polls to Dhaka North City Corporation slated for February 28. The ruling party also picked Syed Zakia Noor, younger sister of former Public Administration Minister and ex-AL general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam, to contest the Jatiya Sangsad election to the Kishoreganj-1 constituency to be held the same day. The nominations were finalized at a joint meeting of the AL Local Government Election Nomination Board and Parliamentary Board held at Ganabhaban yesterday with Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has said, the government is very sincere to reach a reasonable and realistic solution over the issue of Ninth Wage Board Award for journalists and employees working in newspapers and news agencies. The Minister told to the reporters at the conference room of Information Ministry after a meeting of the reconstituted cabinet committee on reviewing the report of the Ninth Wage Board yesterday. Committee members Information Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud, Industries Minister Nurul Mazid Mahmud Humayun and State Minister for Cultural Affairs K M Khalid were present at the meeting.

Commonwealth Secretary General Patricia Scotland has praised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's contribution to the development innovation and women empowerment in the country. Ms. Patricia made the appreciation while she was receiving the newly-appointed Bangladesh High Commissioner to the UK and member of the Governing Board of the Commonwealth Saida Muna Tasneem at the Marlborough House in London recently.

Information Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud has said, a democratic society moves ahead by logic and rebuttal and that's why debate is needed in a democratic country. The Minister said this while speaking at the inaugural function of a debate competition at CIRDAP auditorium in Dhaka yesterday.

Finance Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal has said, new VAT law would come into effect from next July but VAT rate would become different. The Finance Minister said this at a discussion meeting marking International Customs Day at Bangabandhu International Conference Center in Dhaka yesterday.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi has said, owners and labourers have to work in unison to lift the country’s apparel sector forward and stressed on forging cordial relations among the parties to advance the ongoing progress. The Minister was addressing a dialogue on the present scenario of the readymade garment sector organized by the Centre for Policy Dialogue at BRAC Centre in Dhaka yesterday.
