Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has received two international awards - the IPS International Achievement Award and the 2018 Special Distinction Award for Leadership--for her humanitarian and responsible policy in hosting the Rohingyas and for her farsighted leadership over the Rohingya issue respectively. The Inter Press Service, one of the world's leading news agencies, and the Global Hope Coalition, a network of three not-for-profit foundations based at the UN Headquarters in New York, Zurich and Hong Kong honoured her with the two awards on Thursday.    


Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has emphasised the need for three actions, including working for overcoming gender stereotypes regarding women's ability, to advance women empowerment. The Prime Minister was addressing a high-level discussion on 'Economic Growth through Women Empowerment' at the UN Headquarters on Thursday. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was present at the event hosted by President of Lithuania and Chair of the Council of Women Leaders Dalia Grybauskaite.


Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres has said, the UN is with the government of Sheikh Hasina in full solidarity and cooperation. He expressed the firm stance at a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Thursday. Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque said this while briefing media after the meeting.


Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said, a government may be formed with representatives from the political parties having representation in Parliament ahead of the next general election. The PM said this to the media in New York yesterday while replying to a question over the formation of the interim government.  


The 72nd birthday of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also President of the ruling Awami League, was celebrated at home and abroad amid fanfare yesterday. Some leaders who are members of the Bangladesh delegation attending the UNGA presented the party chief with bouquets at her hotel suite in New York on behalf of the Awami League Central Working Committee, wishing her good health, long life and success.


US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday at hotel Grand Hyatt in New York. During the meeting, they discussed different bilateral issues. The PM is now in the United States for the 73rd United Nations General Assembly session. The Premier is scheduled to leave New York for home today and reach Dhaka on October 1 via London.


US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo while meeting with Union State Minister of Myanmar Kyaw Tint Swe, urged Myanmar's government to take concrete steps to investigate human rights abuses against Rohingya Muslims and hold accountable members of its security forces and others for any involvement in those actions, a US State Department official said on Friday, reports Reuters.


Prime Minister's daughter and Chairperson of the National Advisory Committee on Autism and Neuro-Development Disorders Saima Wazed Hossain attended the third annual commemoration of the International Day for Universal Access to Information in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The workshop discussed the availability of technological resources in Bangladesh for people with learning in general and persons with disabilities and how they are being integrated into the education system along with the barriers which are preventing the resources from being properly utilized.


Liberation War Affairs Minister A K M Mozammel Huq has said, Right to Information Act has ensured people’s empowerment as well as the accountability of the government. The minister said this while addressing a press briefing at National Press Club organised by Information Commission marking the International Right to Information Day yesterday. The Right to Information Act, 2009, was enacted to ensure that the people can get all the information what they want. If the authorities enforce all the acts to control people, they can apply the RTI to ensure government’s accountability, the Minister added.
