The nation yesterday celebrated the 48th Independence and National Day paying glowing tributes to the 1971 Liberation War martyrs and architect of the independence of Bangladesh Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. President Md. Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid rich tributes to the war martyrs by placing wreaths at the National Memorial at Savar yesterday morning. On her return from the National Memorial, the PM paid homage to Bangabandhu by placing wreath at his portrait in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi.

President Md. Abdul Hamid yesterday hosted a reception at Bangabhaban marking the Independence and National Day. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, cabinet members, MPs, valiant freedom fighters and their family members and distinguished citizens joined the reception.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has urged the children and juveniles to nourish the spirit of patriotism and prides of a victorious nation to consolidate the country's dignity in the world. The Premier made the urge as she was addressing the Independence and National Day rally of children and juveniles at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka yesterday. The PM, in her address, reiterated the call to parents and guardians as well as teachers and priests to remain careful in keeping the children out of the influences of militancy, terrorism and drug addiction. Earlier at the rally, the Premier led the nation to sing the national anthem in correct form at the rally.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday released a commemorative postage stamp, a first-day cover and a data card marking the 48th Independence and National Day.

Road, Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has said, Bangladesh has made significant progress as it attained eligibility for graduation to a developing nation from the status of LDC. He said this while talking to newsmen after paying tributes to 1971 Liberation War martyrs at the National Memorial in Savar yesterday.

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Engineer Khandker Mosharraf Hossain has said, Bangladesh will be a developed country before 2041 as massive development programmes are being implemented  by the present government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The Minister said this as he was addressing a reception arranged for the freedom fighters in Faridpur yesterday.

Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque has said, the government is working to earn international recognition for observing March 25 as the International Genocide Day. The Minister said this as he was addressing a discussion meeting marking the Genocide Day in Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka.

Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu has said, if we are to remain true to the spirit of our freedom, we should ensure that all forms of pro-Pakistan elements should be kept out of power. The Minister said this while speaking at a function at the Department of Films and Publications on the Independence Day.

Awami League is going to hold a discussion marking the Independence and National Day in the auditorium of the Krishibid Institution, Bangladesh in Dhaka this afternoon. AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to preside over the discussion.

Bangladesh Missions abroad celebrated the Independence Day. State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam, now visiting the United Kingdom, attended the programme of Bangladesh High Commission in London. News on observing the day in Bangladesh Embassy in Washington, D.C. was also covered by media.
