The nation yesterday celebrated the 99th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman through extensive programmes. President Md. Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid rich tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing wreaths at the mausoleum of Bangabandhu at Tungipara in Gopalganj yesterday.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina reiterated her firm commitment to give a bright future to the children by building Bangladesh as a developed and prosperous one freeing from hunger, poverty and illiteracy. The Premier expressed the vow while addressing at a Children’s Rally and Cultural Programme marking the 99th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and National Children’s Day on Bangabandhu Mausoleum Complex premises at Tungipara in Gopalganj yesterday.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid homage to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu at Dhanmondi-32 marking his 99th birth anniversary. Thousands of people from all walks of life including Awami League leaders and workers thronged Dhanmondi-32 yesterday and paid rich tributes to the Great Leader by placing wreaths at his portrait there.

Foreign Minister Dr. A K Abdul Momen has said, Bangladesh had achieved its recognition as a sovereign country across the world in a first paced after its bloody birth in 1971 due to charismatic leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The Minister said this while speaking at a seminar titled “Bangabandhu in International Arena” at Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka yesterday marking the 99th birth anniversary of Bangabandhu.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque has urged health officials for working sincerely to build patient-friendly management at hospitals being inspired with the ideology of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The Minister made the call while addressing a discussion meeting on the occasion of the 99th birth anniversary of Bangabandhu and National Children’s Day -2019 at the auditorium of the National Public Health Institute in Dhaka yesterday.

The 2nd phase of the 5th Upazila Parishad elections is being held in the country today with balloting in 116 upazilas in 16 districts. General holiday has been announced for today in the respective upazilas on the occasion of the elections.

The Japan government has expressed shock at the loss of lives of Bangladeshis in the atrocious terrorist attack in Christchurch, New Zealand. A press release of Japanese Embassy in Dhaka said, Ambassador Hiroyasu Izumi verbally conveyed to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina the condolences from Japan to Bangladeshi victims at the terrorist attack in Christchurch.

Circular bus services will be introduced within April next in Motijheel, Dhanmondi and Uttara areas like Gulshan to ease the city's traffic situation. Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said this while inaugurating a traffic week near Kawran Bazaar in Dhaka yesterday. The traffic week will continue till March 23.

Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd has planned to replace its dilapidated gas pipelines in Dhaka city with new ones as well as to introduce smart prepaid metres for consumers over the next three years. The state-owned company has taken the initiative to replace about 5,000 kms of the distribution pipelines, out of 7,000 kms, in the city.
