The Cabinet has approved 'Addendum to the Protocol on Inland Water Transit and Trade' under which 470 kms of rivers will be dredged with joint financing of Bangladesh and India. The approval came yesterday at the Cabinet meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair. According to the recently signed protocol, India will bear 80 per cent cost and Bangladesh the rests. The cabinet also approved in principle a draft of the Bangladesh Tariff Commission (amendment) Act, 2018 with proposal for changing the name of the commission giving importance to trade.

The Election Commission has rescheduled the 11th parliamentary election fixing the last date of nomination paper submission on November 28 and the polls date on December 30, 2018. Chief Election Commissioner K M Nurul Huda announced the new schedule while addressing the inaugural function of the Electronic Voting Machine display at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in Dhaka yesterday.

The Election Commission has decided to run mobile courts to check violation of the electoral code of conduct in all 300 parliamentary seats in the 11th national election to be held on December 30. The commission has sent a letter yesterday to the Ministry of Public Administration asking to appoint executive magistrates for running mobile courts till the next day of voting.

Nomination papers selling to get the Awami League ticket for contesting the upcoming 11th General Elections concluded yesterday. A total of 4,023 aspirants collected nomination forms from the party office. However, the final list of the AL candidates is likely to be published on November 15 following an interview of the aspirants with the party’s Parliamentary Board on November 14. AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will chair the board.

Finance Minister A M A Muhith has expressed his hope that the conscious voters would cast their votes in the upcoming national election in favour of those who would devote themselves in the people’s welfare. The Minister expressed the views while distributing tax cards to some 202 highest tax payers in Dhaka yesterday.

A weeklong Income Tax Fair begins today in Dhaka and other divisional headquarters aiming to help the taxpayers fill tax returns and facilitate other tax-related works. President Md. Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have issued separate messages on the eve of the week-long income tax fair.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will join an interactive event titled ‘Let’s Talk’ with youths at Ganabhaban on November 16. Some 150 youths, including entrepreneurs, professionals, service holders, students, sports and cultural activists selected from across the country will take part in the event from 3 pm to 5 pm on the day.

Bangladesh has won the ASOCIO 2018 Digital Government Award for the advancement in the ICT sector. Asian-Oceanian Computing Industry Organization (ASOCIO) awarded the National Information and Communication Technology Development Project implemented by Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC). The Executive Director of BCC Partha Protim Dev received the award at a function at the ASOCIO Digital Summit 2018 held in Tokyo on November 8.

The government distributed 260.86 crore textbooks for free among the pre-primary, primary, secondary, ebtedayee and SSC level students in the last nine academic years. NCTB Chairman Prof. Narayan Chandra Saha informed this while talking to the media yesterday.
