President Md. Abdul Hamid has asked the University Grants Commission to be more active to ensure the quality of higher education through enhanced monitoring and establishing accountability in the universities. The President gave the directive while speaking at the ninth UGC Award-Giving Ceremony in Dhaka yesterday.

 

The ECNEC has approved the Selected Madrasha Development Project with an estimated cost of Taka 59186.30 million in a bid to ensure the infrastructural development of some 2,000 selected madrashas in the country. The ECNEC meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair yesterday approved a total of 18 projects involving Taka 177869.50 million.

 

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said, her party is ready to welcome any election observer during the upcoming general election. The PM said this as US Ambassador in Dhaka Marcia Bernicat made a courtesy call on her at Gonobhaban in Dhaka yesterday. During the meeting, the PM highlighted the steps taken by her government and party for making the electoral process free, fair and neutral.

 

Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury has said, the government has provided Tk 60,2680 million as subsidies for the agriculture sector in the last nine years. The Minister said this while replying to a question-answer session in the Jatiya Sangsad yesterday. Liberation War Affairs Minister A K M Mozammel Haque informed the House that the government constructed 2,960 houses for Freedom Fighters across the country. Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Sherif replying to a question said, land offices across the country earned Tk 4,5943.20 million as revenue during the last nine years.

 

Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu has said, the social media must be protected from the dark thrust of the evil forces, which were spreading rumours, falsehoods and provocative messages through these open forums. The Minister said this while speaking at a views-exchange meeting on 'Rumours: Role of Mainstream and Social Media' organised by Press Information Department at the CIRDAP Auditorium in Dhaka yesterday. With Principal Information Officer Kamrun Nahar in the chair, the meeting was also addressed by Media Adviser to PM Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, State Minister for Information Tarana Halim and Information Secretary Abdul Malek.

 

Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan yesterday said, the physical construction work of the proposed US$ two billion Bay Terminal will begin within December this year. The Minister said this while handing over a cheque of Tk 3526.20 million to the Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram for the acquisition of 68 acres land for the terminal.

 

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam has called upon the member states of OIC to raise voice over Rohingya issue during the upcoming UN General Assembly. He made the call while a 16-member delegation of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States met him in Dhaka yesterday.

 

The Prime Minister’s Office has asked the concerned authorities to take necessary measures immediately to keep cargo service open for 24-hour at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The directive came from a views-exchange meeting at the PMO with Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary Md. Nojibur Rahman in the chair yesterday.

 

The government has published a gazette notification declaring 45 per cent dearness allowance for the journalists as per the recommendation of the 9th Wage Board. The Information Ministry issued a notification in this connection yesterday saying, the order will come into effect from 01 March 2018.
